A vacancy in Singapore is only one part of the decision. A foreign candidate also needs to understand the work pass that could cover the role. Start with the Ministry of Manpower, known as MOM, rather than a recruiter's shorthand description of a work visa. Different passes serve different groups and use different eligibility tests.
Find the likely pass family
MOM lists separate categories for professionals, skilled and semi-skilled workers, trainees and other situations. The Employment Pass, S Pass and various Work Permits are not interchangeable labels. Ask the employer which specific pass it expects to apply for and why it fits this job.
Do not choose a category solely because its name sounds close to your occupation. Compare the proposed duties, pay, sector and your circumstances with the official page. If you already have a status in Singapore, check its work conditions separately rather than assuming it permits the new job.
Read the detailed eligibility page
The Employment Pass framework combines a qualifying-salary stage with COMPASS, unless an exemption applies. Meeting a headline salary figure is therefore not a complete eligibility assessment. MOM's detailed page also distinguishes age, sector and the date of the application or renewal.
The S Pass has its own salary criteria and assessment guidance. Avoid saving one minimum figure from a social post as if it applies to every age, sector and future application. Use the current table for the relevant case and ask the employer to check its side of the requirements.
Ask a practical screening question
A useful early question is: Which work pass do you expect this role to use, and have you checked the role and candidate against the current MOM criteria? This is more informative than asking only whether the company sponsors foreigners.
MOM points employers and employment agents to its Self-Assessment Tool. An assessment is useful screening information, not permission to start work or a substitute for an approved application. Keep uncertainty visible until the actual process is complete.
Plan around the approved arrangement
Record who will handle the application, what documents are needed and which official milestones affect the start date. Avoid promising immediate availability if work permission is still unresolved. Do not invent an approval date from someone else's experience.
MOM states that foreigners intending to work in Singapore must have a valid pass before starting work. Keep that check separate from accepting an interview or discussing an offer. A strong application connects your evidence to the vacancy while the employer addresses the correct pass process.
